Context
The Pacific island nation formerly known internationally as Nauru has restored its traditional name Naoero. President David Adeang highlighted the change at the 81st UN General Assembly, presenting it as a restoration of the country’s indigenous heritage, language and identity.
Explanation
- Naoero is a tiny island country in Micronesia in the central Pacific Ocean, located near the Equator, northeast of Australia.
- It is a coral-limestone island and among the world’s smallest countries in both area and population.
- Formerly known as Nauru, it became independent in 1968 after periods of German colonial rule and administration involving Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
- Its capital functions are centred at Yaren district; it has no officially designated capital city.
- Phosphate mining, based largely on deposits derived from seabird guano, historically dominated its economy.
- Its traditional name Naoero is pronounced approximately “Now-ero”; the international country code is changing from NRU to NRO.
- As a low-lying Pacific island state, it is highly vulnerable to sea-level rise and climate change.
