Context
Bharat Taxi, a cooperative-based mobility service, has been formally launched in Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Kanpur and Prayagraj. Based on the principle “Driver is the Owner,” it seeks to make drivers stakeholders in the platform rather than merely service providers.
Explanation
- Bharat Taxi extends the cooperative model into the app-based mobility sector.
- Drivers, called Saarthis, are both service providers and stakeholders/owners in the cooperative ecosystem.
- Unlike conventional aggregators, it aims to maximise drivers’ earnings by avoiding the usual commission-based model and crediting earnings directly to them.
- It reflects the broader “Sahkar Se Samriddhi” approach of expanding cooperatives beyond agriculture, dairy and credit into new sectors.
- Cooperative societies are based on voluntary association, democratic participation and collective economic benefit.
- The Ministry of Cooperation was created in July 2021 to strengthen India’s cooperative movement.
- Cooperatives are specifically mentioned in Article 43B and Part IXB of the Constitution.
