Rotating Detonation Engine: A New Propulsion Technology (Source: The Hindu)

Context

Indian defence start-up D-Propulse recently demonstrated an indigenous 5-kilonewton air-breathing Rotating Detonation Engine (RDE) at a DRDO facility. The experimental technology may support future missiles, drones and high-speed aircraft.

Rotating Detonation Engine: Propulsion Breakthrough

Explanation

  • Conventional engines burn a fuel–air mixture through deflagration, in which the flame front travels slower than sound.
  • A detonation is a much faster combustion process; its flame front moves at supersonic speed along with a powerful shock wave.
  • An RDE uses a ring-shaped or annular combustion chamber into which fuel and oxidiser are continuously injected.
  • After ignition, one or more detonation waves rotate continuously around the annulus, repeatedly compressing and burning the fresh mixture.
  • High-pressure gases expand through a nozzle and generate thrust in accordance with Newton’s third law of motion.
  • Detonation gives pressure-gain combustion, unlike the nearly constant-pressure combustion of conventional combustors, improving thermodynamic efficiency and allowing smaller, lighter engines.
  • An air-breathing engine draws oxygen from the atmosphere, whereas a rocket engine carries its own oxidiser for operation in space.
  • Unlike a Pulsed Detonation Engine, which fires separate detonations in a tube, an RDE produces nearly continuous thrust.
  • Stable detonation control, extreme heat, shock loads and durable materials remain the principal challenges.
