Context
Recently, Rajasthan’s historic Shekhawati havelis, spread across 14 towns including Mandawa, Nawalgarh, Fatehpur, Churu and Sikar, were included in UNESCO’s Tentative List. The move is a preliminary step towards their possible nomination to the World Heritage List.
Explanation
- Shekhawati, in northeastern Rajasthan, is renowned for richly painted havelis, largely constructed by prosperous merchant families, earning it the reputation of an “open-air art gallery.”
- Havelis typically feature courtyards, ornate gateways, carved façades, jharokhas and elaborate frescoes.
- Their murals depict religious and mythological themes, everyday life, flora-fauna and portraits, alongside modern influences such as trains and automobiles.
- The paintings therefore document the social, economic and technological transformations of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
- A UNESCO Tentative List is an inventory of properties that a country may consider nominating for the World Heritage List.
- A property generally must first be on its country’s Tentative List before a World Heritage nomination can be considered.
- Inclusion can strengthen documentation, conservation, restoration and sustainable heritage tourism, but does not itself confer World Heritage status.
