Why These 80 Days Can Make or Break Your UPSC Mains
The UPSC Civil Services Mains Examination is not just a test of knowledge, but of endurance, discipline, and strategy. With nine exhaustive papers spread over five days, UPSC Mains demands not only deep conceptual clarity but also the ability to articulate diverse ideas under intense time pressure.
Also you need to write them in limited time, while incorporating the maps, diagrams and recommendations etc. For all these to write, you need to have strong content and articulation.
For every aspirant, the last 80 days before Mains are precious. This is the time when your preparation consolidates, your answer writing sharpens, and your revision strategy determines whether your name will appear in the final merit list.
But here’s a reality — not all aspirants stand at the same starting point in this race. Some are attempting Mains for the first time, others are seasoned candidates who’ve faced this challenge before, and a select few have even tasted the interview stage or are currently in government service.
Recognizing this diversity, it makes sense to craft three tailored strategies, each suited to the specific needs, challenges, and opportunities of these different groups.
Classification of Aspirants for Mains 2025
Before laying down strategies, let’s classify aspirants into three distinct categories:
First-Timers: Aspirants attempting their first Mains after clearing Prelims — enthusiastic but overwhelmed by syllabus volume and answer writing anxiety.
Veterans: Candidates who’ve written few Mains before but fell short of either marks or confidence — with prior experience but battling accumulated content overload.
Interview-Appeared / In-Service Candidates: Those who’ve crossed Mains in the past or are working professionals in government services — aware of the demands, but dealing with limited time or complacency.
