Recently UPSC has released the final merit list of selected candidates in the Civil Services Exam. It was rush of emotions for the aspirants who turned into civil servants overnight. Let’s not forget the years of struggles, sleepless nights and panic attacks they had to face till the day before.
On the other side, there are also UPSC aspirants who are extremely talented, focused and hardworking and yet failed to make it into the list. Now the popular talk of the town is:
“What UPSC is expecting from us? Why they cleared and why I could not?”
Success has many parents and failure is an orphan. Nobody wants to associate with the failure. This is the time we as a team wants to stand by them and push them towards success in the coming year.
After analysing the marksheets and interaction with hundreds of toppers, La Excellence brings you the answer for your question: what UPSC wants from me?
Strong Mindset:
- The first and foremost thing is a ‘Strong Mindset’ to face any adversity. UPSC journey is full of ups and downs. Overcoming hurdles and passing to next phase requires ‘courage of conviction’ and ‘will power’. The bottom you fall to, the more courage you need to maintain. If you quit, someone else will take your job.
Discipline:
- Then comes Discipline. Discipline does not just mean being obedient and polite. It is being committed to your schedule, rectifying your mistakes and making incremental changes and improving your capabilities.
Let us talk about one of our student who is now a topper. His name is Pavan Kalyan, who scored 146th rank in 2024. He cleared prelims in his very first attempt. Failed to clear mains by some margin. Then he cleared mains in his second attempt and in interview he could not score well. Now in his third attempt he got IPS. What changes he would have made to himself and his schedule according to you?
Now stop reading this article. Take a pen and paper and write on it what would have happened?
He made few changes to his strategies. The 1% increments, where he can make minute changes to his preparation. his first step was following the schedule religiously. On Sunday after the test, he would spend some leisure with his friends, have a good dinner and go back to library after dinner. This is one such increment he made. His approach is :
“If Monday has to start early and be productive, I should start some groundwork on Sunday night itself. I don’t to waste monday morning looking for what to do.”
You would have understood how important discipline is in your preparation.
Consistency:
- Consistency : Consistency is the most important factor in your preparation. If one is not consistent, they can not maintain schedule. If schedule is not followed, they can,t finish the syllabus ,forget about revision. People who are consistent tend to finish their targets in time and revise them thoroughly. This revision gives them scope to write test series well. Once you write test series well, then there is a very high chance that you will be scoring well in the mains exam as well. Because you laid a clear pattern of following things on time and accomplishing those targets.
If you are not consistent , you might skip some topics, delay few tests which would ultimately affect the chance of you getting good scores in the weekend tests. The same would be reflected in the Mains examination.
If one has these 3 traits, then they can master the preparation strategies. It is not that many people are not having these traits. But those who have them better will get good results. After all this is a competitive exam. Those who compete better in every single thing will do well.
Finally the most important thing in the preparation is the ‘STUDY GROUP’ also called as ‘PEER GROUP’. To help you follow these 3 traits, you need a good peer group. If you make some good study group, half your preparation is done. Most of the students undermine this aspect. If you see this year toppers also, many of our students formed into study groups, pulling and pushing each other and they cleared this exam. Your peer should put positive pressure on you and help you avoid distractions. You can converge your efforts and do well in the exam.
You passed your Engineering or Degree by getting things explained more by your friend rather than your sir. The same would apply here. Revision through discussion and collective efforts is the key to your preparation. Identifying this missing link in your preparation, La Excellence has created Enhance Core Group for serious candidates, where by free of cost material, test series, study space and Mentor support are given. This is how we could create a best peer group in India and stand as support system to the aspirants in their journey.
