Context
U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order directing that Lake Ontario be referred to as “Lake America” within the U.S. federal geographic naming system. The change does not compel Canada, which shares the lake with the United States, to adopt the new name.
Explanation
- Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes of North America—Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario.
- It lies on the Canada–United States border, with Ontario province to the north and the State of New York to the south.
- It is the smallest Great Lake by surface area, while Lake Erie is the smallest by volume.
- Lake Ontario receives most of its water from Lake Erie through the Niagara River; Niagara Falls lies along this river.
- It drains eastward through the St. Lawrence River, which ultimately enters the Atlantic Ocean.
- The Great Lakes–St. Lawrence system forms an important inland navigation and international trade route.
- Among the Great Lakes, Lake Michigan lies entirely within the United States; the other four are shared by the U.S. and Canada.
