India is presently enjoying a demographic dividend, with a large working-age population contributing to economic growth. However, falling fertility, rising life expectancy and declining birth rates indicate that India is gradually moving towards an ageing society. If not prepared, this dividend may become a demographic burden.
How India’s demographic dividend may become a burden:
- Rising elderly population: By 2050, nearly one-fifth of India’s population may be above 60 years, increasing dependency on the working-age population.
- Pressure on healthcare: Ageing will increase demand for geriatric care, treatment of chronic diseases, mental health support and palliative care.
- Social security burden: Many elderly people work in the informal sector and lack pensions, creating pressure on government welfare schemes.
- Shrinking workforce: Low fertility may gradually reduce the young labour force, affecting productivity and economic growth.
- Weakening family support: Migration, nuclear families and urbanisation are reducing traditional care systems for the elderly.
- Regional imbalance: Southern states like Kerala are ageing faster, while northern states still have younger populations, creating uneven policy needs.
Way Forward:
India must invest in elderly healthcare, universal social security, pension coverage, age-friendly cities and formal care economy jobs. Skill development, higher female workforce participation and healthy ageing policies are also needed.
Thus, ageing should not be seen only as a welfare issue, but as a major developmental challenge requiring early planning. With timely reforms, India can manage the transition from a young society to an ageing society with dignity and productivity.
