About Battery Aadhaar: What It Is?
- Battery Aadhaar is a digital identification system for batteries, designed to enable full traceability across their lifecycle using secure, blockchain-backed technologies.
- Developed by: Spearheaded by Tata Elxsi through its MOBIUS+ platform, in collaboration with Tata Motors, Tata AutoComp Systems, and IIT Kharagpur.
Objective:
- To assign unique digital IDs to each battery, enabling safe use, regulated reuse, and efficient disposal.
- To align battery usage with national and global compliance standards like the EU Battery Regulation.
Growing Battery Demand in India:
- India aims to double its non-fossil energy capacity (243 GW – nearly 500 GW) in four years.
- The push for 30% EV sales by 2030 will exponentially increase demand for lithium-ion batteries.
- Most batteries and lithium imports currently come from abroad, making India vulnerable to global supply disruptions and protectionist trade policies.
Need for a ‘Battery Aadhaar:
- Proposed as a unique digital identity for every battery, containing details like:
- Manufacturer and localization
- Material composition
- Durability and performance data
- Recycling and second-life usage details
Similar to India’s digital public infrastructure (DPI) model, Battery Aadhaar would ensure transparency and traceability throughout the supply chain.
