Paper: GS-II, Subject: Polity, Topic: Judiciary, Issues: Sabarimala Temple Entry Case
Context:
The Supreme Court has scheduled a 9-judge Constitution Bench to hear review petitions related to its 2018 Sabarimala judgment, which allowed entry of women of all ages into the temple.
Background of the Case:
- In September 2018, a 5-judge bench of the Supreme Court ruled by a 4:1 majority to lift the age restrictions on women’s entry to the Sabarimala temple, declaring Rule 3(b) of the Kerala Hindu Places of Public Worship Rules, 1965 unconstitutional.
- The ruling was met with mixed reactions, leading to petitions for a review of the decision.

The upcoming Constitution Bench hearing will revisit fundamental questions on gender equality, religious freedom, and the scope of judicial intervention, making it a landmark case for constitutional interpretation in India.
