India’s rapid digitisation and rising consumption of electronic devices are generating increasing volumes of e-waste. At the same time, discarded electronics contain valuable metals, critical minerals and sensitive data. Therefore, e-waste management must move beyond simple disposal towards resource recovery, security and sustainability.

  • Computers, servers and storage devices may continue to contain confidential personal, commercial or government information even after disposal.
  • Organisations should therefore insist on: Secure data destruction, Certification of destruction, Traceability of discarded equipment, reliable recycling partners
  • Hence, e-waste management is also an issue of data governance and cybersecurity.

Who should act?

  • Private companies and public institutions should integrate environmental, security and strategic considerations while selecting recyclers.
  • They should evaluate recyclers on:
    • Environmental compliance
    • Recovery efficiency
    • Technological capability
    • Data-security standards
    • Traceability
    • Worker safety
  • Government should create the enabling regulatory framework through:
    • Stronger enforcement of Extended Producer Responsibility
    • Certification and auditing of recyclers
    • Digital tracking of e-waste
    • Incentives for formal recycling
    • Support for advanced domestic recycling technologies

Way Forward:

  • Shift from “lowest-cost disposal” to “highest-value recovery.”
  • Encourage repair, refurbishment and reuse before recycling.
  • Promote design of electronics for repairability and recyclability.
  • Strengthen formal recycling while integrating informal workers into safer organised systems.
  • Develop domestic technologies for recovering critical and strategic minerals.
  • Include lifecycle, environmental and security costs in corporate and government procurement decisions.

Every e-waste decision therefore carries two balance sheets: the visible financial balance sheet and the larger strategic balance sheet. India must treat e-waste not merely as a waste-management challenge, but as an opportunity for a circular economy, resource security, cybersecurity and sustainable industrial development.
