India’s Arctic Strategy in the Oslo Summit Framework

Paper: GS-II, Subject: International Relations, Topic: India’s relations with major powers, Issue: INDIA’S NORTHWARD TURN: OSLO SUMMIT & India’s Arctic Strategy.

Context:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Oslo for the Third India–Nordic Summit at a time when India’s engagement with the Nordic countries has gained strategic importance due to changing geopolitics in Europe, growing competition in the Arctic, and India’s expanding interests in clean energy, technology, maritime connectivity and supply-chain security.

BACKGROUND:
(India’s Arctic Strategy)

Explanation

Significance of Nordic Countries

  • Green Energy Leadership: Nordic countries are global leaders in offshore wind, green hydrogen, electric mobility, battery technology and clean shipping. These areas match India’s renewable energy and net-zero ambitions.
  • Technology and Innovation: Nordic strengths in telecommunications, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, advanced materials and digital governance can support India’s manufacturing and digital transformation.
  • Maritime Expertise: Norway, Denmark and Sweden have strong capabilities in shipping, ports, shipbuilding and marine logistics. This is important for India’s blue economy and maritime connectivity.
  • Supply Chain Diversification: Cooperation with Nordic countries can reduce overdependence on China in critical minerals, clean technology, batteries and advanced manufacturing.
  • Arctic Access: Norway, Denmark through Greenland, Iceland, Sweden and Finland provide India useful scientific, technological and logistical linkages with the Arctic region.
  • Strategic Partnership: India and Nordic countries share democratic values, climate concerns, trade interests and support for a rules-based international order.

Arctic and Its Importance for India

  • Climate Linkages: Arctic warming affects global weather systems, Indian monsoon patterns, Himalayan glaciers and sea-level rise along India’s coastline.
  • Scientific Research: India’s Arctic research helps understand climate change, polar atmosphere, ocean circulation, glacial melting and environmental feedback systems.
  • Shipping Routes: Melting Arctic ice may open shorter sea routes (Northern Sea Route) between Asia and Europe, which can reshape global trade and maritime strategy.
  • Energy and Minerals: The Arctic contains hydrocarbons, rare earths and critical minerals, making it important for future energy security and technology supply chains.
  • Geopolitical Relevance: Russia, China, NATO countries and Nordic states are increasingly active in the Arctic, making it a zone of strategic competition.
  • India’s Strategic Need: India requires a stronger Arctic policy, scientific presence, diplomatic engagement and cooperation with Nordic partners to protect long-term national interests.
  • Arctic maritime developments may also connect with India’s interests in the Chennai–Vladivostok corridor, port logistics and Indo-Pacific–Eurasian connectivity.

Conclusion

India’s partnership with Nordic countries can strengthen its clean energy transition, technology base, maritime capability and Arctic understanding. As the Arctic becomes more strategically contested, India must move from limited scientific engagement to a wider diplomatic, economic and geopolitical strategy.
