The findings highlight stagnating rural incomes amid rising living costs and weakening income expectations despite optimism for the near term.

- NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) is the apex development financial institution for agriculture and rural development, providing policy support, refinancing and rural credit.
- The Rural Economic Conditions & Sentiments Survey, conducted since September 2024, tracks rural households’ income, consumption, employment, government transfers and economic expectations.
- Rural household income mainly depends on agriculture, allied activities, wage labour, non-farm enterprises and government transfers, making it vulnerable to inflation, weather and market conditions.
- Inflation reduces the real purchasing power of households; when a large share of income is spent on consumption expenditure, savings and investment capacity decline.
- Government support through subsidies, Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), MGNREGS and PM-KISAN helps supplement rural incomes, while sustained inclusive growth, higher agricultural productivity and non-farm employment are essential for improving rural livelihoods.
