Way Forward
- Transparent information: Mandate disclosure of treatment costs, standard tariffs, itemised bills and treatment alternatives.
- Standard treatment protocols: Develop evidence-based clinical guidelines and standard treatment packages to limit unnecessary interventions.
- Independent regulation: Strengthen state health regulators, accreditation, clinical audits and grievance-redressal mechanisms.
- Empowered patients: Promote health literacy, second-opinion systems and accessible public health facilities to strengthen patients’ bargaining power.
