Introduction:
India has successfully increased its tiger population to 3,682 (2022). However, conservation has now entered a second phase where the focus must shift from increasing numbers to ensuring ecological balance and sustainability.
Tiger Carrying Capacity and Its Implications:
- Carrying capacity refers to the maximum number of tigers that a habitat can sustainably support based on prey availability, territory, and ecological conditions.
- When tiger populations exceed this limit, it leads to increased competition, forcing weaker individuals to disperse outside protected areas.
- Such dispersal often results in higher human–tiger conflict, livestock predation, and retaliatory killings, as seen in parts of Madhya Pradesh.
Importance of Habitat Connectivity:
- Habitat connectivity through wildlife corridors enables movement of tigers between reserves for dispersal and breeding.
- It helps maintain genetic diversity and prevents isolation of populations.
- Fragmentation due to infrastructure and land-use change disrupts corridors, increasing inbreeding risks and conflict during dispersal.
Need for Ecological Balance:
- Excessive focus on population growth without habitat expansion can strain ecosystems and reduce prey availability.
- Conservation must therefore prioritize habitat quality, prey base, and coexistence with local communities.
Conclusion:
India’s tiger conservation must now move beyond numbers to a habitat-centric approach, where managing carrying capacity and ensuring connectivity are essential for long-term sustainability.
