Why is the declaration of Ecologically Sensitive Areas essential for the protection of the Western Ghats? Examine the ecological consequences of mining, quarrying, polluting industries and unplanned construction in the region. (10 Marks, 150 Words)

Introduction:

The Western Ghats are a global biodiversity hotspot, a major monsoon barrier and the source of several peninsular rivers. Declaring vulnerable areas as Ecologically Sensitive Areas (ESAs) is therefore necessary to regulate environmentally destructive activities while permitting sustainable livelihoods.

Importance of ESA Declaration:

  • Biodiversity conservation: It protects endemic and threatened flora and fauna from habitat destruction and fragmentation.
  • Water security: Forest protection safeguards river catchments, groundwater recharge and perennial streams.
  • Disaster-risk reduction: Regulation of slope-cutting and deforestation reduces landslides, floods and soil erosion.
  • Climate regulation: Forests act as carbon sinks and help regulate rainfall and local temperatures.
  • Planned development: ESA status prevents indiscriminate land-use changes without automatically prohibiting agriculture, plantations or existing settlements.

Ecological Consequences of Harmful Activities:

  • Mining and quarrying remove vegetation, destabilise slopes, generate dust and contaminate water sources.
  • Polluting industries release toxic effluents and emissions, degrading rivers, soil and public health.
  • Unplanned construction fragments wildlife corridors, blocks natural drainage and increases surface runoff.
  • Such cumulative pressures cause biodiversity loss, human–wildlife conflict, water scarcity and greater vulnerability to extreme rainfall events.

Conclusion:

A scientifically demarcated and locally consultative ESA framework is essential to preserve the ecological security of the Western Ghats. Conservation must be combined with livelihood support, compensation and sustainable development alternatives.
