Context: India’s expanding manufacturing sector continues to depend on Chinese machinery and components. Consequently, producing more goods domestically can also increase imports. Bilateral goods trade reached $167.6 billion in 2025, but rising imports and weak exports reveal an imbalance, challenging India’s ambition of industrial self-reliance.
Conclusion
India must move beyond assembly towards domestic component manufacturing, technological innovation and greater value addition. Stronger domestic capabilities and diversified suppliers can reduce dependence while supporting industrial growth.
