Paper: GS-III, Subject: Science and Technology, Topic: Medical science and Health, Issue: Reducing Salt Intake: Preventing Disease Through Better Nutrition
Context: Tamil Nadu announced a State-wide mission to reduce salt intake among the public. It proposes changes in government meals, public awareness and better management of high blood pressure to prevent heart disease, strokes and kidney damage.

Body
- How excess salt harms: Too much sodium can cause the body to retain extra water, increasing blood volume and pressure inside blood vessels. Persistently high pressure is called hypertension, which can damage the heart, brain and kidneys.
- Measuring actual consumption: Tamil Nadu plans a State-wide survey using urine samples. Since much consumed sodium leaves through urine, testing helps estimate intake and establish a baseline for measuring progress.
- Improving government meals: Salt will be gradually reduced in government kitchens, including nutrition programmes, childcare centres, hospitals and hostels. Gradual reduction allows people to adjust to less salty food.
- Encouraging healthier choices: Awareness campaigns will promote reading food labels, tasting before adding salt and using natural flavourings. Pickles, papads, sauces and packaged snacks also contribute to daily intake.
- Examining salt substitutes: Low-sodium salts replace some sodium with potassium. Their suitability will be examined; people with kidney disease or medicines affecting potassium require medical advice.
- Strengthening preventive healthcare: Screening, counselling and treatment can improve hypertension control. The mission connects nutrition, behavioural change and prevention of non-communicable diseases, which do not spread between people.
Conclusion
Reducing excess salt is an affordable public health intervention. Combining healthier food environments with awareness and primary healthcare can prevent illness and reduce medical expenses.
