Barn Swallow Migration Shift and Ecological Adaptation

Barn Swallow Migration Shift and Ecological Adaptation

Context:

A study has found that some barn swallows in Manipur’s Imphal Valley have stopped long-distance migration and are now breeding locally throughout the year. The finding highlights how birds may alter migration and nesting behaviour due to ecological and human-induced changes.

  • Barn swallow is a small passerine bird scientifically known as Hirundo rustica.
  • It is a widespread migratory species, usually breeding in temperate regions and migrating to warmer areas during winter.
  • In India, barn swallows are generally winter visitors, but some populations are now showing resident breeding behaviour.
  • The Manipur study suggests a shift from migratory trait to sedentary trait in parts of the Imphal Valley.
  • Possible reasons include climate change, land-use change, urbanisation, suitable nesting sites and year-round food availability.
  • Barn swallows are insectivorous birds, so their presence can indicate ecological changes in insect populations.
  • The study is important for understanding avian migration, behavioural adaptation, speciation, subspecies variation and ecological plasticity.
