The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has arrested a factory owner in Dehradun for allegedly allowing his facility to be used for illicit manufacturing of Captagon tablets. The arrest is linked to Operation RAGEPILL, under which India made its first major seizure of Captagon tablets/powder worth around ₹182 crore
- Captagon is an illicit synthetic stimulant linked to fenethylline, an amphetamine-type psychotropic substance.
- It is abused mainly for temporary alertness, euphoria, reduced fatigue, increased stamina and suppressed fear.
- Its harmful effects may include addiction, anxiety, aggression, insomnia, cardiovascular stress, hallucinations and long-term neurological damage.
- Captagon trafficking is a major concern in the Middle East, where it has been linked to organised crime and conflict networks.
- Operation RAGEPILL is an NCB-led anti-narcotics operation that uncovered an international trafficking network involving Captagon.
- The operation led to seizure of about 227.7 kg of Captagon tablets/powder and highlighted concerns over India being used as a transit or manufacturing point.
