Paper: GS – III, Subject: Environment, Ecology and Disaster Management, Topic: Indian initiatives, efforts and Commitments, Issue: Role of ISA.
Context:
India is leading in promoting solar energy globally. It focuses on the role of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and its four key pillars in enabling a clean energy transition, especially in the Global South.
Key Highlights:
India’s Solar Energy Growth: As of April 2024, India achieved 224 GW of renewable energy capacity. Of this, 108 GW is solar energy. This accounts for one-third of the global additions in solar capacity in the Global South.
Factors contributing to growth:
- Political will and regulatory support under PM Narendra Modi.
- Transparent solar bidding, subsidy distribution, and private sector participation.
- Reduced tariffs: Solar tariffs dropped by 69% between 2014 and 2024.
- Lower module prices and increased local production (domestic manufacturing capacity: 25 GW).
India’s Global Leadership:
- Hosted the Voice of Global South Summit (2024) with 123 countries.
- Advocated for developing nations (especially the African Union) on global platforms.
- Embraced the concept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (One World, One Earth, One Family).
International Solar Alliance (ISA):
- Launch: Launched by India and France at COP-21 in 2015 with the aim of creating a collaborative platform to scale up solar energy.
- Membership: 116 signatory countries.
- Collaboration: UNFCCC, COP, Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), Mission Innovation and Green Grids Initiative work with ISA.
Four Pillars of International Solar Alliance’s (ISA) Strategy:

Conclusion:
International Solar Alliance’s (ISA) is crucial in helping the Global South transition to solar energy. India, through its leadership in ISA, is catalyzing global clean energy efforts. The four-pillar approach provides a strong institutional framework to implement solar strategies globally.
